***IN THE SLOT*** A FANTASY RECAP OF THE NHL NIGHT IN ACTION
Yesterday's games concluded the NHL's regular season. The playoffs will begin on April 11.
NOTE: We will shortly have an analysis of each of the first round playoff series available to you, which players to definitely keep, sleepers, and which team we project to win the series.
Ramifications from yesterday's games:
The Vancouver 3-0 shutout over Edmonton gave them the President's Trophy and home ice as long as they remain in the playoffs. Roberto Luongo was sharp, and will be the Canucks starter to begin the playoffs. It will be interesting to see how much leash the coach will give him with Cory Schneider ready as backup.
The Los Angeles Kings 3-2 loss to San Jose dropped them all the way to the eighth seed in the Western Conference, so they will play Vancouver in the first round. Dan Boyle had 2 goals, and won the game in OT.
Despite losing in the shootout 3-2 to Chicago, the point Detroit got for making it to OT kept them ahead of Chicago in the playoff standings for the fifth seed, while Chicago came in sixth. Pavel Datsyuk scored the tying goal in regulation with less than one minute left. Since Detroit now has to play Nashville in the first round, while Chicago will play Phoenix, not sure if it was worth it for the Red Wings.
In a game devoid of any playoff effects Tampa Bay beat Winnipeg 4-3, notable only for the fact that the human scoring machine known as Steven Stamkos scored his 60th goal of the season. Congratulations to him!
Florida's win 4-1 win over Carolina gives them the Southeast Division crown and the third seed in the Eastern Conference. Mikael Samuelsson had a three point night for the Panthers. Florida will play New Jersey in the first round.
The Phoenix Coyotes 4-1 win over Minnesota gave them the Pacific Division title and the third seed in the Western Conference. They will play Chicago in the first round. Radim Vrbata scored his 35th goal of the year, ending a very solid regular seaon campaign for him.
While their playoff positions were already established, Pittsburgh's 4-2 win over Philadelphia was notable for Evgeni Malkin winning the Art Ross Trophy for NHL scoring leader. Malkin scored his 50th goal last night and ended the season with 109 points.
