THE GOALIE EDGE: 4/3/2014

ALL GOALIES ARE CONFIRMED UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED AT THE TIME OF PRINT

Columbus is hanging precociously to the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference as they try to hold off 5 other suitors for that position.  Sergei Bobrovsky looks to walk into Philadelphia and steal one from Steve Mason and the Flyers.  Mason returns to net after a game off but he has one of his last three starts.  The Blue Jackets could surprise here….

The surging Dallas Stars, winners of 3 straight, stroll into Carolina in hopes of continuing their push to the playoffs.  Kari Lehtonen is coming off a 5-0 blanking of the Washington Capitals and seems to be in the zone.  He will be up against Anton Khudobin who is clearly the number 1 net minder for the Hurricanes from this point on in the season.  The Canes are 4-4-2 in their last ten games but it hasn’t been enough to get them closer in the playoff hunt.  Stars are bright lately….

Chad Johnson (LIKELY) will see some action for the Boston Bruins after Rask lost to the Detroit Red Wings last night.  Toronto’s playoff hopes are riding on the shoulders of Jonathan Bernier, who is making his 5th straight start for the Maple Leafs.  With their 8-game losing streak behind them, perhaps the Leafs can get on a roll, but face an incredibly hot team in the Bruins.   It’s tough to go against the big, bad Bruins….

Karri Ramo and the Calgary Flames head into Tampa Bay to take on Ben Bishop and the Lightning.  The Flames have been playing tight hockey without getting the results and that trend will continue tonight against the Bolts….

The man without a country has finally settled in Minnesota and looks pretty damn good considering what he has gone through over the past two seasons.  Ilya Bryzgalov looks to solidify the Wild’s playoff spot against a Chicago Blackhawk team that will be without its two top superstars.  However there is plenty of firepower left in Chi-town, and with Corey Crawford in net, the Hawks remain tough.  Home ice means a lot in a tight-fisted matchup….

Buffalo shuffles off to St. Louis to take on the NHL leading Blues.  Nathan Lieuwen gets the nod against Brian Elliott.  This screams mismatch all the way from top to bottom….

Marc-Andre Fleury goes up against Ondrej Pavelec and the Winnipeg Jets tonight.  Pittsburgh should win this one easily, but the Jets have been known to play hard every now and then.  Maybe this is one of those ‘now’ moments.  Probably not.  Go with the Pens….

The “King” and his court head into Colorado to go against the former King in Patrick Roy and his Avalanche.  Henrik Lundqvist (LIKELY) mans the net for the NY Rangers against Semyon Varlamov in what could be a doozy of a goaltending battle.  The Rangers are 8-2-0 in last ten while the Avs are 6-3-1.  Too close to call….

Martin Jones (LIKELY) gets the call in the second of back-to-back nights for the Los Angeles Kings as they head up the coast to San Jose to take on Antti Niemi and the Sharks.  Probably one of the best matches on the night.  Try not to miss this one.
