First Wave(1-25)- Erik Karlsson, John Klingberg

IN STEVES DEFENSE: RISING FLAMES

Nick Leddy, New York- We expected a huge breakout season for Leddy this season coming after a 37-point effort in 2014-15. Unfortunately to the chagrin of many fantasy owners, all he had accounted for so far is 8 points in 29 games. Huge disappointment for sure, but his two assist game last night and a spot on the top powerplay unit over Marek Zidlicky suggests that he might be in serious buy-low mode.

IN STEVES DEFENSE: FIVE PLUS THOUGHTS

Ryan Suter, Minnesota- interesting news out of Minny had the their best defenseman complaining to the media about being paired with Jonas Brodin in practice. He insists on playing with a right hand shot like Jared Spurgeon and the numbers do tell the story. Most of Suter's 20 points in 22 game came with Spurgeon on his side, so his dissatisfaction could be an issue to fantasy owners- if these pairings stick around for awhile. Quick note- he did score the game-winner last night so maybe it doesn't matter much after all.

IN STEVE'S DEFENSE- KLINGBERG STREAKING UP

Posted by steve on Wed, 2015-11-18 13:40

John Klingberg, Dallas- Wow, the 23-year old is following up his superb 40-point rookie seasons with huge numbers- 20 pts in 18 games. When you are out-scoring the likes of Karlsson and Subban, you know that the potential "elite" tag will come up. I would say given that 10 of his 20 points came on the power play and how explosive the Dallas offense is, there is little reason to believe he can't keep up a top-five pace. Klingberg looks like a special talent so maybe fantasy owners should treat him as such. ROAD TO ELITE

IN STEVES DEFENSE: FIVE PLUS THOUGHTS

Duncan Keith, Chicago- fantasy owners must be overjoyed to hear that the All-Star could be available to play over the weekend as he looks almost fully recovered from his meniscus tear in his knee. There is no sugarcoating how detrimental his absence has had in most fantasy leagues as he is tough to replace. I say get him back as soon as he gets into game action.

IN STEVE'S DEFENSE- MARKOV STILL ELITE

Posted by steve on Wed, 2015-11-04 13:16

Andrei Markov- It's time to remind ourselves that the best fantasy tandem in defense resides in Montreal as the 36-year old continues to put up numbers comparable with the more heralded PK Subban. Markov had seemingly put his knee issues aside and has formed a dynamic duo with Subban in the Hab's top power play unit.

IN STEVES DEFENSE: FIVE PLUS THOUGHTS

Colton Payrako, St. Louis- With much of the rookie talk centered on the super hyped forwards in Year 1, it's time to take notice of the towering defenseman in St. Louis who is off to a fabulous start with 6 points in 9 games. While logging over 23 minutes of TOI including power play, he has displayed a huge shot and also very liable in the defensive zone. His uptick in fantasy value is largely aided by Kevin Shattenkirk's absence due to injury but nevertheless, his sleeper potential makes him a top waiver wire target. SLEEPER ALERT

IN STEVE'S DEFENSE: NOT SO OBVIOUS...ZIDLICKY & SAVARD

Posted by steve on Thu, 2015-03-05 18:46

The trade deadline came and went with a few high profile fantasy defenders finding new homes such as Keith Yandle and James Wisniewski. Both are certain to see their fantasy value shoot up as they have joined two elite teams, respectively the New York Rangers and the Anaheim Ducks.

IN STEVE'S DEFENSE- FANTASY BLUELINE WEEKLY

Posted by steve on Thu, 2015-02-26 17:00

*Andrej Sekera is heading toward LA after being traded to the defense-needy Kings. The void left due to Slava Voynov's indefinite suspension and Alec Martinez(concussion) being out since early February made the Sekera acquisition a valuable one, both in real-life and to fantasy owners . His numbers have plummeted after a career year in 2013-14, where he collected 44 points for Carolina, but maybe a change of scenery and a boost in power play minutes can make him fantasy relevant the rest of the season.

IN STEVE'S DEFENSE: FANTASY SURPRISES- KLINGBERG AND HAMONIC

Posted by steve on Thu, 2015-02-19 18:55

A few unlikely candidates rank amongst the top fifteen fantasy defensemen over thr last month. John Klingberg continues to make a name for himself in Dallas as he had wrested away top pp duties from Alex Goligoski and Trevor Daley. With 12 points over the last 12 games, including 6 on the man advantage, the young Swede had delivered fantasy elite numbers and should be in all starting lineups while he is keeping it up. The rookie of the month for January hasn't slowed a bit in February, collecting 6 points in 8 games.

IN STEVE'S DEFENSE: THE MYERS/BOGOSIAN FANTASY SWAP

Posted by steve on Thu, 2015-02-12 18:42

The massive trade that included Evander Kane going to Buffalo also had two key defensemen moving to opposite teams, albeit both not producing up to their capabilities. In the case of both Tyler Myers and Zach Bogosian, sky was the limit for both in regard to their offensive upside upon entering the NHL but both have  fallen on hard times. Obviously, Myers made the bigger splash with a 48-point debut in his rookie season, but Bogosian was just as highly touted before he was drafted third overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

IN STEVE'S DEFENSE: YANDLE TRADE RUMORS AND FANTASY BUZZ

Posted by steve on Thu, 2015-02-05 12:56

Amid all the trade rumors swirling around well before the trade deadline, Keith Yandle's name had been the most talked about amongst elite offensive defensemen. The Arizona Coyotes have again been abysmal this season and it maybe time for a full rebuilding process. While Yandle is young enough to still contribute to the teams future growth, his trade value is at an all time high. He is amongst the best fantasy dmen in the game, ranking 5th in points with 36 and is tied in the entire league in power play points with 21.
